Anglican Parish News

The Rector writes:  Since the last edition of the Village Link, in the Summer of 2021, we have enjoyed more freedom to get out and about, and resume some of the activities that play such an important part in our lives, and the life of our community, although it is still appropriate to be prudent and take precautions to control the risk of spreading infections and viruses. On 11th September, we had a very happy tea party on the grass beside St Michael & All Angels Church, which raised £500 for the Bells and Clock Appeal.

Many thanks to everyone who supported that event, particularly to Paul and Jill Morgan who supplied the delicious refreshments.

TBy the time you read this, we will have commemorated Remembrance Sunday in church and at the war memorial, and will be looking ahead to Advent, carol services and Christmas. Details of the Christmas services we are planning can be found in this magazine (p38), so why not make a special effort this year to come to a carol service, or Christmas Communion, with a friend or neighbour, perhaps? You will see that we are also offering a carol service via Zoom – this was well received last year, and enables people from far and wide to enjoy traditional, and possibly more contemporary, carols and Bible readings, without having to leave home. If you would like to join in this service, or know someone who might like to, please send an email and we will get in touch with the joining details. Please also check our website: www.bournevalleychurches.org.uk for information about local churches and activities, and do continue to take care of yourselves, remembering to keep a sensitive and watchful eye on any vulnerable neighbours, so that together we can grow as caring communities and face the future with as much confidence and resilience as possible.  Thank you, and every blessing.

The Bourne Valley Prayer Tree (so called because it has ‘branches’ i.e. people in our parishes who respond to the request to pray, spread throughout the valley) is available to all, if you would like someone to pray for you, or know a family member or friend who needs prayer. Call the coordinator, Ali Joyce on 01980 619195 with a date when you would like the prayer to begin, and please also let her know as and when the need for prayer changes. Thank you.

Team Prayer:

Be with us, Lord, in all we do and say,

Visit each home with your peace and love

Turn all hearts and minds to you, our loving God, in Jesus’ name, Amen

Update on St Michael & All Angels Bells & Clock Restoration Appeal: Thanks to continuing generosity from members of our community, and some grant making organisations, we have now reached the point where we can begin the process to enable the restoration work on the Clock to be carried out.

As you know, the bells are currently being restored and retuned, and once they are rehung in the church tower, the clock mechanism can be set to enable the hours and half hours to be rung, using the tenor bell. We may have to be patient, as the firm that will undertake this work has a lot of orders to fulfil, but your prayers that the whole project would be completed in time for the bells and clock to be fully functioning for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, would be much appreciated.

Please contact the Rector, Rev’d Peter Ostli-East on 01980 611350 or speak to a Churchwarden or any PCC member, for more information about activities at the Anglican churches in the Bourne Valley.

You can also visit our website at: www.bournevalleychurches.org.uk and please let us know your thoughts, ideas and comments.

If you enjoy having a regular, printed, Magazine for your local news and information, you may be interested in subscribing to the Bourne Valley Magazine… The BV Mag is managed, edited, printed and distributed by people connected with the Churches in the Valley, from Cholderton to Ford, and it carries adverts and articles about events and activities throughout the Bourne Valley. 10 editions are produced each year, i.e.: monthly except for July/Aug and Dec/Jan, which are ‘combined’ issues, and the annual subscription is still only £5.00. Profits at the end of each year are shared between the Parish Churches, in proportion to the number of subscribers from each Parish. Subscriptions are now invited for 2022, so if you live in Winterbourne Gunner, Winterbourne Earls, Winterbourne Dauntsey, Hurdcott or Ford, and would like to see a sample copy, or to subscribe, please contact Rev’d Peter Ostli-East 01980 611350. If you would be willing to help with managing BV Mag subscriptions and deliveries here in the Winterbournes – or would like to develop your journalistic skills in assisting the Editor, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, thank you.

Please remember that your parish churches continue to need your financial support, so do talk to your PCC treasurer and arrange to make increased regular donations, if you can, or a one-off donation, gift aided where possible.

For St Mary’s, please contact the PCC Treasurer, Mrs Hilary Geddie on 01980 611575.

For St Michael & All Angels, you can make a donation directly into the Church’s main bank account, as follows: please note: the correct name of that Account (at Lloyds Bank, Salisbury) is: PCC Winterbourne Earls, Churchwardens Account Sort code: 30-97-41 Account number: 00670254  Please email St Michael & All Angels PCC Treasurer, Richard Scott when you donate directly, so he is aware – thank you.

For parishes which have joined it, the Parish Giving Scheme makes setting up a regular donation very easy and effective, please visit the website to find out more: https://www.parishgiving.org.uk

Thank you in advance for your generosity, which is very much appreciated at this time.

Remember, the churches are here for YOU, and need your presence and support if each parish church is to flourish and remain viable.
