The picture post-card appears to date from about 1930.  The lane then cambered steeply from north to south (left to right in the picture) and had a ditch on the south side. On the right was an orchard, now partly occupied by The Wilderness which was built during the 1930s.  The reading room, to the left of centre of the picture, was demolished for road widening during the late 1960s.
